This is a whirlpool (vâltoare) in Chiuzbaia, România. It is an ancient way to wash carpets: the water from clean fast mountain streams is diverted into a structure made of wood that twirls the current; the carpets are put inside this structure and left for a couple of hours, the water doing the cleaning job. The traditional whirlpools are rare these days, especially in remote areas such as Northern Romania, in Maramureș County.
