Castelul de Lut – Valea Zânelor

The Clay Castle (Castelul de Lut) from the Fairy Valley (Valea Zânelor) is another outstanding sight at the foot of the Fagaras Mountains in Sibiu County. It’s the creation of a family who had the idea of making a great building out of hay and clay only. Green ecological building, a bit weird, Gaudi-like. Would be a hotel someday, now still under development. It’s rather easily accessible by car, in the Porumbacu de Sus area. Here are some photos with details. Funny enough, the house has a large lightning rod, for obvious reasons. The castle is close to a river, has a beautiful scenery of snow-caped mountains and already has in place a shop for souvenirs and some coffee/tea possibilities, served on hay-made armchairs as you will see below. Everything sold at the souvenir shop is locally-made or Romanian-made, or without additives, and quite expensive so as to support the construction site. Good marketing and good guiding from the hosts, something really rare in this country. I recommend for the originality of this idea and for the persistence and tenacity of a family who wants to make a difference.
