Mikis Theodorakis

Mikis Theodorakis is most famous for the soundtrack of the film Zorba the Greek, based on the novel of Nikos Kazantzakis. For some of you who are too young, here are the last moments of the film showing Anthony Quinn performing the basic steps of the dance and portraying the typical easy-going attitude of the Greeks.

Theodorakis still lives today. He is 90 years old now. The video below shows him in a 2001 concert, while performing some of his most beautiful songs: the Zorbas soundtrack or Strose to stroma sou – Στρώσε Το Στρώμα Σου, O Kaimos – Ο Καημός and Sto Perigiali – Το Περιγιάλι. Note the distinct white clothes and the same relaxed attitude, the attitude you have when you know that you represent thousands of years of history and a fantastic culture that influenced the entire humanity.

Denial – Άρνηση (Sto perigiali to kryfo) is a poem written by the Greek poet Giorgos Seferis. Its musical version by Theodorakis continues to be one of the most beautiful and well-known Greek songs. The song is performed in video below by Maria Farantouri.

On the secret seashore
white like a pigeon
we thirsted at noon;
but the water was brackish.

On the golden sand
we wrote her name;
but the sea-breeze blew
and the writing vanished.

With what spirit, what heart,
what desire and passion
we lived our life: a mistake!
So we changed our life.
