When you read Carl Rogers’s books, you get a sense of warmth and kindness. He is considered one of the most important psychotherapists in our history, and his techniques and innovations are focusing mostly on the way we approach, we talk and we listen to the people in need. It’s the relationship, not only the technique, that matters.
In one of his books, I found, for the first time, the characteristics of a fully functioning person. Rogers’s vision is humanistic and bright, quite different from the dark Freudian viewpoint. So, what are these traits?
Openness to Experience
People usually use a lot of defense mechanisms to protect themselves from all kinds of distress. If you’re open to experience, your avoidance is diminished and you are ready to live everything, good or bad, knowing the value of each experience.
This means living each moment fully, with a lot of trust, flexibility, courage and curiosity.
Trustworthiness of Human Nature
This means trusting your organism, your judgment, your ability to choose what behavior is appropriate for each particular moment, not only relying on social norms, but trusting that you will be able to use your own sense of what is right and what is wrong.
Freedom of Choice
This means that you can make a wider range of choices more fluently, play a role in determining your own behavior and be responsible for this.
This means you are resourceful and you find original solutions.
Reliability & Constructiveness
This means you can be trusted to act in a constructive manner and you are open to all your needs, maintaining balance between goodness and aggressiveness.
Intensity & Richness of Life
This means your life is rich, full and exciting, mixing together joy and pain, love and sorrow, fear and courage, more intensely. Also, it involves stretching and growing to your maximum potential.
